Middle East Conflict - Reference Library

Middle East Conflict: Primary Sources provides readers with firsthand contact with some of the influential documents relating to conflict in theMiddle East. The primary sources have been divided into seven thematically organized chapters. The first four chapters provide official documents, proclamations, and resolutions relating to the dominant conflict in the region. Included are those documents that are most essential to understanding this complex issue, from the Balfour Declaration of 1917, which provided the basis for European support for a Jewish state in Palestine, through the United Nations Security Council Resolutions of 1967 and 1973 that attempted to provide a structure for peace, to the Israeli government’s Disengagement Plan of 2004 that provided hope that Palestinians might secure control over their own land. The remaining chapters offer alternative approaches to understanding conflict in the region, from the philosophies of competing political programs to personal accounts of individuals caught up in terrorism, warfare, and military occupation, as well as a look at how the conflicts have influenced artists. While the primary documents themselves are the main component of each chapter, introductory and concludingmaterial that is designed to help the reader understand the context in which the primary source has meaning have been included. Each primary source section also has questions to prompt further reflection on the meaning of the document.
