Mikhail Leontevich Mil was born on 9 November 1909 in the Soviet city of Irkutsk. In 1926 he entered the Siberian Technological Institute at Tomsk, and later studied at the Aviation Institute in Novotsherkask. In 1929 he helped design the first Soviet autogiro. the KaSKR-1. under the guidance of N.I. Kamov and I.K. Skrishinsky. Mil graduated from the Novotsherkask Institute in 1931 and joined the Autogiro and Helicopter Department of the Central Aero and Hydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI) in Moscow where he was engaged in research on helicopter aerodynamics. By 1936 he had become an engineer in the helicopter design bureau and later became deputy to the Chief-Designer. Nikolai Kamov.
