F4U-1 Corsair 'No 4' My Bonnie of VMF-124 throws up a spray of water from Munda's runway in August 1943 following a tropical storm. Although neither Finn nor Walsh can recall any of their unit's aircraft being adorned with names, VMF-124 did utilise some of VMF-213's F4Us, and vice versa. As such, this may have been a former VMF-213 aircraft. This machine again has two false gun ports on each wing (National Archives via Pete Mersky).
VMF-124's 'D Flight' ('No 5 Flight') consisted of 1st Lt Howard J Finn (6 kills) standing at left, 1st Lt Mervin L Taylor (1.5 victories), flight leader Capt William E Crowe (7 kills) and 1st Lt Tom R Mutz, who claimed three victories. Finn was on the 14 February mission when the unit first saw combat. He chased a lone Zero and was immediately jumped by more enemy fighters. For protection he positioned himself below one of the B-24s he was supposed to be protecting - 'Some big hero!', as he said recently when interviewed for this volume (Finn collection).
