Aircraft of The Aces - American Aces of WW1

Elliott White Springs epitomises the spirit of the young American 'knights of the air'. Having trained as an aviation cadet he became a 16-victory ace with No 85 Squadron RAF and the 148th Aero (see Chapter 5). After the war he wrote a number of best-selling aviation books, became a multi-millionaire businessman and served in the US Army Air Corps in World War 2 (Bruce Robertson).
Air fighting developed from the need to foil the enemy's aerial attempts to spy on army positions and movements. Here, observer Lt John H Snyder in a Salmson 2A 2 two-seater of the 91st Aero (US) Squadron hands over vital photographic intelligence. In its five months existence (June to November 1918) the 91st Aero lost 13 fliers, but successfully downed 21 enemy aircraft. (US National Archives).
